Christmas Seasonal Simplicity Series

Welcome back to week 4 of the Christmas Seasonal Simplicity Series! Can you believe there’s only 1 month left until Christmas? Each week my blogging friends and I have been sharing a variety of Christmas projects to inspire you for the season. So far, we’ve shared Christmas crafts and DIY ideas, homemade Christmas ornaments, and free Christmas printables, and, this week, we have some beautiful Christmas mantel ideas to show you! You can find all of the designs at the end of the post, so be sure to check them out.

Christmas Mantel Ideas

The mantel always seems to be a focal point when it comes to Christmas decor. Truth be told, decorating our mantel is one of the harder things I find to decorate. We have a very long mantel that extends over both the fireplace and the built in shelves on either side. I always find it challenging to find that balance between it looking to bare and making it look too cluttered. It usually takes lots of fussing and switching things around before I finally find what I like.

Winter Wonderland Christmas Mantel Ideas

Today, I thought that I would share the steps for putting together this winter wonderland Christmas mantel. Hopefully, it helps to inspire you for your own mantel.

Choose a Focal Point.

I always start with one large focal point in the centre of the mantel and then build out from there. This year, I kept the same black metal arched mirror that I used for our fall mantel. I played around with adding a wreath or bunting to it, but opted to just keep it simple.

Lay down the garland.

While I absolutely love the look {and smell!} of fresh greenery, I usually opt for faux greenery due to the practicality. This year I found these cute pom pom snowball garlands and thought it would work great on our mantel. Our regular faux garland was too thick to work with it, so I ended up using greenery picks instead. I used two different types of picks and just layered them in starting from the centre of the mantel and moving outwards.

Layer it up.

Once you have the garland fluffed up, layer on some other items to add more interest and fill in any gaps. I used snowy covered pinecones and the air dry clay stars that I made last year, but there are lots of other options. Pretty ribbon, ornaments, dried oranges, cinnamon ornaments – anything goes!

Hang the stockings.

You can’t have a mantel without stockings! They’re the perfect way to add a pop of color or create warmth with some cozy texture. I bought these white knit stockings a couple of years ago and still love them. We actually have different family stockings that we hang on Christmas Eve, but these are what I use for the rest of the season.

Add some height.

I always add something with height to the end of each side of the mantel. I got these black metal candlesticks for Christmas last year, and these battery-operated taper candles add the perfect warm glow! The candles turn on and off from a remote and can be put on a timer for 2-8 hours. You can also choose from a solid glow or more of a candle flicker light.

Turn on the glow.

For me, lights are always the best part of the Christmas mantel. They just bring such a pretty glow and add that warm and cozy touch. I like to use the warm white lights and the more the better! These smart plugs that I bought last year make turning on and off the Christmas lights SO much easier – especially if your plugs are in awkward places. I have them linked to my phone and just have to click the button from anywhere in the house to turn them on and off. You can also use voice assistance with your Alexa or Google Assistant if that’s more your thing.
